Here’s a Hilo wedding I photographed last year, before I launched this blog. I still enjoy looking at these photos, and the memory of creating them with Susan & Chris makes me smile. 🙂
The morning began with wonderment…

A beautiful ceremony….jpg)

It was spectacular at Onekahakaha Beach Park, with a mist hanging in the air thrown up by high surf. Sheets of rain had been falling in the distance all morning, and soon enough blessed us up close….jpg)
Shelter was a necessity…
After the rain stopped, we went outside to be greeted by the sun…
Susan is an interior designer. Chris is a veterinarian. But not on this day. They were simply Susan & Chris on this day. Completely in love. The only thing on their minds was each other….jpg)
We decided to explore the surrounding area…
Trekking along the coast, under threat of rain, sometimes going shoe-less to cross vast tidal pools…
But they were thrilled to see one another on the other side; laughing, smiling and now married. And I knew that this day — Susan & Chris’ day — would bring a smile to my face for years to come…
Yep. Still does. 🙂

I don’t think I’ll ever understand how a shy, quiet person such as myself can enjoy being with people so much. I’ll admit that after a session or wedding I need a few hours or a day’s worth of relative solitude to recharge my batteries. But it sure is fun when I’m out there! Especially when I photographed Christine & Nathan for their Hilo engagement session!

Awesome awesome fun. Thank you Christine & Nathan. Can’t wait for your wedding in June!

There was a sense of calm as I entered the fishpond and beach at Honokohau, in Kona. A different sort of vibe from most other sandy beaches on the Big Island; it was uncrowded, quiet and felt a little bit hidden.
Calm. Peaceful. Off the radar. It was the perfect place for Marci & Rachael’s engagement session & wedding. The sun soft and bright in the sky. Smiles and laughter from family and friends. Waves, sand and rock. Simple, calm and quiet. Perfect.

Thank you so much, Marci & Rachael, for allowing me to experience such a wonderful two days with you two!

PS. And if it isn’t obvious, yep, I’m LGBT friendly!
Every day is a new beginning. A fresh start!
Never was this more apparent than the day of my portrait session with Monica.

We took these photos in a tiny forest, where Monica and her husband hope to start fresh one day, and build a house to retire in..jpg)

Mellow, gracious, and full of fun — Monica was awesome to photograph! I was excited to hear that these photos were meant not only as a gift for her husband, but also as a memoir for herself. She had recently lost weight, and it was touching to hear her story and help capture the start of a new chapter in her life.
I feel fortunate to have met you, Monica! Hope to see you on the Big Island again! 🙂
…
On my way out I noticed this flower and loved the colors and light. I swear, photography was invented for days like this one!

Extreme happiness in November, due in no small part to the countless hours I got to spend with loved ones 🙂

Susan & Chris - Jim,
Thank you so much for capturing our special day in such an incredible way! It’s a neat feeling to know that you too look back on our wedding day and smile. Every time we look at our wedding day photos we are instantly transported back to that morning in Hilo. And I often find myself wiping a tear out of the corner of my eye. It was such a beautiful morning – such a beautiful place to be married – and you captured all of our special moments from the day in just the perfect way! We both felt an instant comfort with you – as if we had been long time friends. We are so glad that you were a part of our wedding day! Can’t wait to see more of your pictures from the Phillipines and hear about that monkey!
